Past Simple Tense

What is the Past Simple Tense?

The Past Simple Tense is used to talk about actions that started and finished in the past.

When Do We Use It?

Use the Past Simple to talk about: - ✅ Completed actions - ✅ Past experiences - ✅ Finished events - ✅ Historical facts


Formula

Positive

Subject + Verb (Past Form) + Object
Example: I visited Dhaka yesterday.

Negative

Subject + did not + Verb (Base Form)
Example: I did not visit Dhaka yesterday.

Question

Did + Subject + Verb (Base Form)?
Example: Did you visit Dhaka yesterday?


Time Expressions

Common words used with the Past Simple: - yesterday - last week / last month / last year - ago (e.g., 5 years ago) - in 2020 - this morning

💡 Remember

Use Verb 2 only in positive sentences.
After Did, always use Verb 1.

(Use Verb 2 for past actions.)

(After "Did", always use Verb 1.)
