📖 1. What is Pronunciation?

Pronunciation is how you say a word. It includes the sounds, the stress (which part is louder), and the rhythm of your speech.

Why is pronunciation important? Good pronunciation helps you be understood. It makes you sound more confident and natural.

উচ্চারণ কেন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ? ভালো উচ্চারণ আপনাকে বোঝাতে সাহায্য করে। এটি আপনাকে আরও আত্মবিশ্বাসী এবং স্বাভাবিক করে তোলে।

🔊 2. The 44 English Sounds

English has 44 sounds (phonemes), even though there are only 26 letters. These are divided into vowels and consonants.

Did you know? English has more sounds than letters. That's why spelling is often different from pronunciation.

আপনি কি জানেন? ইংরেজিতে অক্ষরের চেয়ে বেশি শব্দ আছে। তাই বানান প্রায়ই উচ্চারণের থেকে আলাদা হয়।

Vowel sounds (20): Short, long, and diphthongs.

Consonant sounds (24): Voiced and voiceless.

We will practice them step by step.

🔊 3. Vowel Sounds

📈 5. Word Stress

In English, one syllable in a word is stressed (said louder and longer). Getting the stress right makes you sound natural.

TAble
● ○
টেবিল
DOCtor
● ○
ডাক্তার
comPUter
○ ● ○
কম্পিউটার
beGIN
○ ●
শুরু করা
underSTAND
○ ○ ●
বোঝা
INTERnational
● ○ ○ ○
আন্তর্জাতিক

💡 Tip: English is stress‑timed. Stressed syllables are longer and louder. Unstressed syllables are shorter and weaker.

💡 টিপ: ইংরেজি স্ট্রেস‑টাইমড ভাষা। স্ট্রেসড সিলেবল লম্বা এবং জোরে হয়। আনস্ট্রেসড সিলেবল ছোট এবং দুর্বল হয়।

📈 6. Sentence Stress

In a sentence, we stress the important words (content words) and reduce the grammar words (function words).

  • Content words: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs – stressed
  • Function words: prepositions, articles, pronouns, auxiliary verbs – reduced

I WANT a coffee.

She DOESN'T like tea.

Where ARE you?

💡 Tip: Listen to native speakers – they don’t say every word equally. Practice by reading sentences aloud and exaggerating the stress.

💡 টিপ: নেটিভ স্পিকারদের শুনুন – তারা প্রতিটি শব্দ সমানভাবে বলেন না। জোরে পড়ার অনুশীলন করুন এবং স্ট্রেস বাড়িয়ে বলুন।

🎵 7. Intonation

Intonation is the rise and fall of your voice. It shows feeling, meaning, and attitude.

  • Statements: voice falls at the end.
  • Yes/No questions: voice rises at the end.
  • Wh‑questions: voice falls at the end.
  • Surprise/excitement: voice rises sharply.

You are coming (statement)

Are you coming (yes/no question)

What are you doing (wh‑question)

🔗 8. Connected Speech

Native speakers don't speak word by word – they link words together. This makes speech faster and more natural.

  • Want to → Wanna
  • Going to → Gonna
  • Did you → Didja
  • What are you → Whatcha
  • I don't know → I dunno

💡 Tip: Practice linking in simple phrases. Listen to native speakers and try to copy the flow.

💡 টিপ: সাধারণ বাক্যাংশে লিংকিং অনুশীলন করুন। নেটিভ স্পিকারদের শুনুন এবং তাদের প্রবাহ অনুকরণ করুন।

❓ Common Questions

Why is English pronunciation difficult?
Because English has many more speech sounds than letters, and the same spelling can represent different sounds. For example, "cough", "though", and "through" all have different pronunciations.
Should I learn IPA?
You don't need to master every IPA symbol immediately, but learning the most common symbols helps you pronounce new words correctly using a dictionary.
How long should I practice?
10–15 minutes every day is more effective than studying for several hours once a week. Consistent listening, repeating, and recording yourself improves pronunciation over time.
